Westside Rendezvous Continues
May 14 Plummer, ID The 2007 summer weekend festival was such a success that plans have been made to establish an annual event for the Westside communities of Desmet, Tensed, Plummer and Worley. Last year’s event grew out of the Horizon’s project and one of the resulting projects, the Community Pride Committee.
The 2008 Westside Rendezvous has had several planning meetings already. Kathy Kolar said, “T his year there is more time for planning. We started earlier and have the later parade date of August 9. Community members will again be helping the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Wellness Center finish off Rock’n’ the Rez day camp with a one-day carnival. There will also be two dances over the weekend, Four On The Floor Friday night at a farm outside of Tensed and Rampage on Saturday night in Plummer.”
Plummer Senior Citizens, Lakeside Booster Club and the FAA will have fundraiser feeds and Plummer Action Committee will host a potluck picnic welcoming Lakeside graduates back to reunions.
The Native Village in Worley was a big success last year. The teepee and native crafts will again be on display. Stick game was demonstrated and very popular as many local residents had never seen this native game. This year more people are being asked to display and to discuss their homestead and early settlement memorabilia.
Some of the other activities include Car Show, Fishing Derby, Mini Fair, kids games, parade, silent auction, raffles and a Sunday Singspiration with specials from various local church groups.
The 2008 Westside Rendezvous will be Aug. 8, 9 and 10 with activities staged in the Desmet-Tensed area, Plummer and Worley. For parade applications contact Kathy at 686-1366.

The Coeur d’Alene Tribe Environmental Programs Office recently received free recycling containers through a grant from the National Recycling Coalition/Coca-Cola Company for 60 recycling bins for aluminum cans and plastic beverage bottles. These bins are free to any Tribal offices or local businesses that would like to help out with the Tribe’s recycling efforts.
Initially, each office or business receiving the bins will be responsible for transporting the cans and bottles to area recycling centers on your own; however, we will be working towards some more organized means of recycling, in the future.
At this point, we have received 30 clear plastic bins, with lids (about the size of a 32 gal. garbage can). These bins snap together or can be stored flat, when not in use. Later, we will receive 30 hard blue plastic bins, with covers, labeled for cans or bottles.
If you would like one or more bins for your office(s) or business, please contact Bill Denton at 686-6412 or Tiffany Allgood at 686-8802 and we will make arrangements to deliver the bins to you.

Potlatch Fund, a Native-led organization that seeks to increase philanthropy within Northwest Indian country, is looking for community volunteers to join its Community Building Grant Review Committee.
The Fund, which operates in the four-state region of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana, has distributed $400,000 in funding since 2005.
Ideal committee members will have the following skills and attributes:
· Be an enrolled member of an American Indian/Alaskan Native Tribe.
· Reside within the Fund’s four-state region.
· Have an understanding of the issues facing northwest Native communities and Native-led organizations.
· Be experienced with non-profits, particularly with non-profits operating in Indian Country.
This is a volunteer position, however reasonable out of pocket expenses can be met. Committee members should expect to spend about one day evaluating the applications prior to the review meeting and another full day reviewing the applications as a group. A second group meeting to discuss strategies for the next grant round is expected to take half a day. Out of state members are encouraged to participate in the group meetings via telephone. Other meetings may be required from time to time as needs dictate.
This is an opportunity for appropriate individuals to help Potlatch Fund achieve that next layer of success in its grant making program. Nominations can be sent on a confidential basis to

As most of you probably know, JoAnn Brown-Sonder has been hospitalized since March 7 for congestive heart failure. (Baby Archer is doing fine). The doctors say this is extremely rare at her young age. She has responded well to the medication (her heart is now pumping at 25% instead of 12% - although it is supposed to be at 55% as I understand it) and they are now allowing her to walk around the hallways, whereas before she was only allowed to get out of bed to go to the bathroom. JoAnn is scheduled for surgery Thursday morning (March 20) for the doctors to put in a defibulator. I do not know how much longer she will be in the hospital. Needless to say, expenses are piling up for the family, due in part to the high price of gasoline.
The Lakeside Boosters are coordinating a benefit Spaghetti dinner on March 28, 2008, at the Longhouse in Worley, beginning at 4:30 p.m. and going until we run out of food. Price will be $5 per plate for spaghetti, salad, French bread, dessert, and a drink. Donations will also be accepted. We will be scheduling shifts for people to help cook on the 28th, and to serve, and do cleanup at the end. Please contact Mindy Parker if you want to volunteer to work.
Food donations can be made through the following people:
Lakeside High School – Dawn Sifford – 686-2158
Lakeside Middle School – Sherry Chapman – 686-2204
Lakeside Elementary – Mindy Parker – 686-2117
CDA Tribe – Chris Dohrman – 686-6106.
(We have already received 10 pounds of burger from Dale Johnson)

It is people - you - me - our employers - our employees - our neighbors - EVERYONE.
Building social capital is building our human networks and making connections. It is an important part of having a healthy community. Several of us attended a recent workshop on this topic and left with a driving desire to spread out and make sure that we have the networks in our communities to help everyone feel welcome and be successful in life. One idea that we discussed at length was putting together information that could be given to newcomers and long time residents so that everyone knows what is available in our communities. This information is vital in developing these networks, yet is something that we do not have. At least not yet!
