JoAnn Brown-Sonder Benefit - March 28

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

As most of you probably know, JoAnn Brown-Sonder has been hospitalized since March 7 for congestive heart failure. (Baby Archer is doing fine). The doctors say this is extremely rare at her young age. She has responded well to the medication (her heart is now pumping at 25% instead of 12% - although it is supposed to be at 55% as I understand it) and they are now allowing her to walk around the hallways, whereas before she was only allowed to get out of bed to go to the bathroom. JoAnn is scheduled for surgery Thursday morning (March 20) for the doctors to put in a defibulator. I do not know how much longer she will be in the hospital. Needless to say, expenses are piling up for the family, due in part to the high price of gasoline.

The Lakeside Boosters are coordinating a benefit Spaghetti dinner on March 28, 2008, at the Longhouse in Worley, beginning at 4:30 p.m. and going until we run out of food. Price will be $5 per plate for spaghetti, salad, French bread, dessert, and a drink. Donations will also be accepted. We will be scheduling shifts for people to help cook on the 28th, and to serve, and do cleanup at the end. Please contact Mindy Parker if you want to volunteer to work.

Food donations can be made through the following people:

Lakeside High School – Dawn Sifford – 686-2158
Lakeside Middle School – Sherry Chapman – 686-2204
Lakeside Elementary – Mindy Parker – 686-2117
CDA Tribe – Chris Dohrman – 686-6106.
(We have already received 10 pounds of burger from Dale Johnson)

Musical Desserts - March 20

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Last year the Lakeside Band had a terrific event called Musical Desserts. This was a musical event with small ensemble music provided by our own music students and accompanied by yummy catered desserts provided by our own Food Production class. We have received so many requests to repeat the program that we have scheduled a repeat performance for Thursday, March 20, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. at the Rose Creek Longhouse, Worley Idaho. For tickets contact Lakeside High School 686-1937 or class advisors Laura Wommack, Foods class at 686-2147 or Joy Smith, Band class at 686-2131.

Frog Regatta Festival - April 19

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

The Rockford’s Lion Club is beginning to sell frogs for the annual Frog Regatta Festival. If you are unfamiliar with this, you buy a frog for $5 and then on Saturday, April 19 the frogs (plastic) are dumped into the Creek in Rockford. The first frog to get to the end of the race earns the owner $300, the second gets its owner $200 and the third place gets the owner $100.

The proceeds from the frog sales go to benefit youth and community activities, such as the previous scholarships which were awarded to Lakeside, Liberty, and Freeman graduating seniors. Most recently, three of our student groups (FFA, FCCLA, and Senior Class) received a total of $1,000 in financial assistance from the Lions to attend trips they are taking. They have also donated money in the past for various fund raisers including benefits for medical expenses in our community, as well as other student activities.

If you are interested in buying your “racing frog” and contributing to the Lions fund raiser please contact one of the following people: Mindy Parker, Bettie Hensley, Karyn Stockdale, Lion Tim Stockdale, Lion Sam Meyle, Lion Bill Burns, Lion Stacey Sonder, Lion Rich Wienclaw, or Lion Dan Sneve. May the best frog win!

Emerging Leaders

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

It seems like only yesterday since Leadership Plenty was offered here. I’m not sure of the final numbers, but quite a few people from the Reservation took the course. Some were already leaders and wanted to hone their skills, while others were interested in the role and wanted to test the waters.

Kathy Kolar is one who has emerged into a community leader after taking the course. She took a leadership role with the West Side Rendezvous and continues to help lead the charge. She has stepped forward to become more involved with other community help projects and currently serves as a co-chair for the Community Pride Team. Kathy even took on the daunting task of going before the County Commissioners to request using a vacant County lot for a community garden.

Another Leadership Plenty alum, Gerald Green, has taken a more serious look at himself as a community leader. From the shyest in class, he has taken his passion for life long learning to the next level by co-chairing that team with Dr. Chris Meyer.

Other classmates have taken on leadership roles throughout the community, some feel more empowered and now voice their opinions on government and community issues, and a couple even kicked around the idea of running for an elected office.

There are many more success stories to share and a bright future ahead. Leadership Plenty will be offered again this year to help others realize their leadership potential.

Revising Plummer’s Zoning

Friday, January 4th, 2008

The City of Plummer will continue efforts to revise the zoning codes and map to reflect the goals and objectives from the Comprehensive Plan adopted last year. As with the planning process, the zoning process continues to be very transparent and public. Public meetings are scheduled for the next two months at 6 pm at City Hall: On January 22 the meeting will focus on gathering public input and opinion on various zones to better define them and on February 26 the meeting will focus on gathering input and opinion on the specific regulations for each of the zones. Everyone is welcome!

Work Plans Available

Monday, December 10th, 2007

The Action Teams all presented their work plans verbally at the Community Breakfast November 29th. Complete work plans are available as separate pages to the right.

Life Long Learning will be focusing on building and strengthening educational programs for all ages, increasing the proportion of graduates from the High School, defining a process for identifying factors that contribute to dropping out of school, establishing a career program with job sahdowing, internship and visitation experiences for high school students to explore the many career opportunities in the communities, passage of bonds for the construction of a new school and library, and providing a continuous learning clearing house through establishing connections with local universities, community and technical colleges and through establishing a format for visiting speakers. Basically, they would like to increase level of optimism and appreciation within the local communities through involvement in educational activities.

Communication and Leadership will be working to improve communications by promoting the blog as a useful informational tool, hosting informal gatherings for leaders to build relationships, exploring options for a formal leadership group that would encompass all of the entities, starting a cooperative project of a non-controversial nature to foster working together, and trying to determine the most effective way to provide communication. They hope to have an impact on reducing poverty by building strong community leaders who make more efficient use of resources through cooperative efforts.

Vision Launch Results in Four Action Teams

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

The Vision Launch was held on September 27th at the Plummer Community Center. Forty-five community members discussed the issues and concerns which came out of the Visioning Rally. These included a lack of support for educaiton, a lack of investment in the future of the community, a lack of community pride, a non-inclusive environment, a lack of connection between the communities, youth issues and concerns for young people, Tribal and local governments not working together, a lack of future for the children in the community, a division within the community, and a lack of relationships between people.

Four Action Teams were formed to work on issues so that the vision can become reality.
