JoAnn Brown-Sonder Benefit - March 28

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

As most of you probably know, JoAnn Brown-Sonder has been hospitalized since March 7 for congestive heart failure. (Baby Archer is doing fine). The doctors say this is extremely rare at her young age. She has responded well to the medication (her heart is now pumping at 25% instead of 12% - although it is supposed to be at 55% as I understand it) and they are now allowing her to walk around the hallways, whereas before she was only allowed to get out of bed to go to the bathroom. JoAnn is scheduled for surgery Thursday morning (March 20) for the doctors to put in a defibulator. I do not know how much longer she will be in the hospital. Needless to say, expenses are piling up for the family, due in part to the high price of gasoline.

The Lakeside Boosters are coordinating a benefit Spaghetti dinner on March 28, 2008, at the Longhouse in Worley, beginning at 4:30 p.m. and going until we run out of food. Price will be $5 per plate for spaghetti, salad, French bread, dessert, and a drink. Donations will also be accepted. We will be scheduling shifts for people to help cook on the 28th, and to serve, and do cleanup at the end. Please contact Mindy Parker if you want to volunteer to work.

Food donations can be made through the following people:

Lakeside High School – Dawn Sifford – 686-2158
Lakeside Middle School – Sherry Chapman – 686-2204
Lakeside Elementary – Mindy Parker – 686-2117
CDA Tribe – Chris Dohrman – 686-6106.
(We have already received 10 pounds of burger from Dale Johnson)

Musical Desserts - March 20

Friday, March 14th, 2008

We have received so many requests to repeat the program that we have scheduled a repeat performance for Thursday, March 20, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. at the Rose Creek Longhouse, Worley Idaho. For tickets contact Lakeside High School 686-1937 or class advisors Laura Wommack, Foods class at 686-2147 or Joy Smith, Band class at 686-2131.

Connecting With Partners

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

The Partnership Summit at the Long House was a fantastic opportunity. Our community had at least seven (that I counted) attend. Thank you to all who committed their time to attend and make connections with potential partners.

Laura gave a great presentation on what we are trying to accomplish (which sounds like A LOT) which helped the people from various agencies tell us what do that is relevant to our goals. It was comforting to hear that other communities are experiencing similar issues and have similar ideas on how to tackle these issues.

When it came time to talk to the partners we all split up to get the most out of the day. One that I visited with was the 2 degrees North West Project: where art meets the land. It is a project working to create a place based economy tied to heritage, culture, landscape and community. Our community has many assets that members were able to identify quickly. They will be seeking more input to develop a guide book which will be a major bonus for local businesses.

The Palouse Clearwater Environmental Institute is another potential partner. Several of us talked to Courtney about possible stream restoration projects as we look at beautifying our communities.

After speaking to the gentleman from the Western Rural Development Center, I am very excited about the e-Commerce training coming up, and have a new outlook, on how to market this training to our community. With the broadband and free computer lab open to the public this can be a wonderful opportunity for cottage industries.

While the entire day was great, the most valuable time I spent was the conversation with Laura from Kendrick Julietta about their newsletter. Being able to have an in depth discussion about solutions along with the issues from a neighboring community was fantastic.

What is Social Capital

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

It is people - you - me - our employers - our employees - our neighbors - EVERYONE.

Building social capital is building our human networks and making connections. It is an important part of having a healthy community. Several of us attended a recent workshop on this topic and left with a driving desire to spread out and make sure that we have the networks in our communities to help everyone feel welcome and be successful in life. One idea that we discussed at length was putting together information that could be given to newcomers and long time residents so that everyone knows what is available in our communities. This information is vital in developing these networks, yet is something that we do not have. At least not yet!

Idaho Horizons Summit: Bringing Communities and Partners Together

Monday, December 17th, 2007

The Idaho Horizons Summit will be an exciting and interactive opportunity to connect our Horizons community with potential partners. We hope that the partnerships made during this summit will provide us with valuable resources for completing our action items, as well as offer partners the chance to develop and expand upon their services to rural Idaho communities.

We will have a 15 min. time slot to present our community’s goals, vision, and action items to tell the partnering organizations what they can do to help our community. Everyone will have the chance to speak one-on-one with partnering organizations after the presentations, during the networking sessions. This will be a valuable time for solidifying contact information and compiling resources.

All community members are invited to attend the full day.
Worley, ID January 23rd Coeur d’Alene Tribal Longhouse
9am-3pm, with lunch provided.

Please call Laura at 686-1716, or email her at laural@uidaho.edu,  if you plan to attend. She will need to have a headcount of attendees by the 15th of January.

Work Plans Available

Monday, December 10th, 2007

The Action Teams all presented their work plans verbally at the Community Breakfast November 29th. Complete work plans are available as separate pages to the right.

Life Long Learning will be focusing on building and strengthening educational programs for all ages, increasing the proportion of graduates from the High School, defining a process for identifying factors that contribute to dropping out of school, establishing a career program with job sahdowing, internship and visitation experiences for high school students to explore the many career opportunities in the communities, passage of bonds for the construction of a new school and library, and providing a continuous learning clearing house through establishing connections with local universities, community and technical colleges and through establishing a format for visiting speakers. Basically, they would like to increase level of optimism and appreciation within the local communities through involvement in educational activities.

Communication and Leadership will be working to improve communications by promoting the blog as a useful informational tool, hosting informal gatherings for leaders to build relationships, exploring options for a formal leadership group that would encompass all of the entities, starting a cooperative project of a non-controversial nature to foster working together, and trying to determine the most effective way to provide communication. They hope to have an impact on reducing poverty by building strong community leaders who make more efficient use of resources through cooperative efforts.
