WE ENCOURAGE YOU to utilize us to save your memories! AND………WE will HELP you to make a simple video of it to keep for yourself to play at home, send to far away friends and family, post on your youtube or myspace accounts, or more.  Here is an AWESOME idea for Father’s Day or birthdays….why not make a personal video for your dad (or whoever) telling them your very special message, add some music, add still pictures and give them a video card!!! Guess how much that will cost you……ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Well, just the cost of the DVD and envelope. But yet that gift is priceless because it will mean so much to that person. Whatever you choose to do, we want to show you how…..FOR FREE! We are in the office M-F 8a-4:30p and can work with you anytime during those times to get you started on your very own project. Anyone can do this. All we need is you to show up. If you are interested in one on one training, please call Leslie at 208-686-1164 or Bill @ 208-686-2022 to set up a time to come in. We do alot of work in the lab and community so if we do not answer, please leave a message of what time and day is best for you with your name and phone number and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Our classes are beginner friendly. If you have never touched a video camera before, we can show you how! And how to make something with your footage.

The Coeur D’Alene Tribal Technology Center will be starting our E Commerce segment of our grant soon and we will be teaching various classes on what E Commerce is, how to be involved as a buyer or seller online, online securities for purchasing online, how to start your own business online and more. Classes will start June 2nd and will be every Mon- Thurs. Times TBD soon. I have sent out a short survey to include the community in choosing what things they would like to learn and have recieved a few back but not as many as I had anticipated so I am going to take those surveys into consideration and do the best I can to offer as many topics as I can. I can tell you that Mondays will always be like an intro to E Commerce, explaining what it is about and how you can be a part of it and throughout the week will be more detailetd about being a part of it. I will have the scheudule out by Monday morning, May 26th.  So if you have ever thought about possibly starting your own business from home, or have a business that is not on the web yet, or just want to see what all is out there, come check out our classes!! Westside Rendezvous 2008 Planning Mtg Notes

Westside Rendezvous Continues

May 14 Plummer, ID The 2007 summer weekend festival was such a success that plans have been made to establish an annual event for the Westside communities of Desmet, Tensed, Plummer and Worley. Last year’s event grew out of the Horizon’s project and one of the resulting projects, the Community Pride Committee.

The 2008 Westside Rendezvous has had several planning meetings already. Kathy Kolar said, “T his year there is more time for planning. We started earlier and have the later parade date of August 9. Community members will again be helping the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Wellness Center finish off Rock’n’ the Rez day camp with a one-day carnival. There will also be two dances over the weekend, Four On The Floor Friday night at a farm outside of Tensed and Rampage on Saturday night in Plummer.”

Plummer Senior Citizens, Lakeside Booster Club and the FAA will have fundraiser feeds and Plummer Action Committee will host a potluck picnic welcoming Lakeside graduates back to reunions.

The Native Village in Worley was a big success last year. The teepee and native crafts will again be on display. Stick game was demonstrated and very popular as many local residents had never seen this native game. This year more people are being asked to display and to discuss their homestead and early settlement memorabilia.

Some of the other activities include Car Show, Fishing Derby, Mini Fair, kids games, parade, silent auction, raffles and a Sunday Singspiration with specials from various local church groups.

The 2008 Westside Rendezvous will be Aug. 8, 9 and 10 with activities staged in the Desmet-Tensed area, Plummer and Worley. For parade applications contact Kathy at 686-1366.

Blog Questions Week 8

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Congrats to Andrea of Grangeville, she’s our weekly winner!

Thank you all for the interesting responses about your community and what makes it ‘unique’ to you compared to other rural communities in Idaho.

I grew up in a small farming community in Idaho near the Utah border and I still think about it every day, the views and colors and smells and intense farm work we did (pulling rye, driving around and around in a tractor for 12 hours a day, herding cattle, etc) helped shape my life and world view. It’s that sense of place that helps define who we are and how we relate to the world around us.

I hope you’re all getting comfortable and familiar with the blogging process. Mary, MJ and I thank you for all the time and hard work you’ve devoted to this part of Horizons and know it’s just a small part of what you are all doing in your communities.

Please let MJ (merijoz@uidaho.edu) or me (dgray@uidaho.edu) know if we can help you with any questions you might have about blogging.

A ‘how to blog’ handbook is now available on our Horizons website at http://extension.ag.uidaho.edu/horizons/coaches.htm at the very top of the page…

Reflective Questions:

As we near the ‘end’ of this phase of Horizons, take a moment to look back on the past 18 months to answer these questions.

Has your community sought any additional resources outside of Horizons for your projects?

How has your community partnered with communities and/or organizations beyond Horizons?

Scavenger Hunt Question:  Which Horizons community has an organization sponsoring a ‘Volcano Breakfast’ and what IS a Volcano Breakfast?

This week’s winner will receive a copy of:

One Nation, Underprivileged: Why American Poverty Affects Us All / Mark Robert Rank

Rules: Post your answers on your blogsite by May 20 (midnight) and be entered in the drawing for one of our book titles…

Blog Questions Week 7

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Congrats to Christine of Kooskia, she’s our weekly winner! Thank you to all who have recently signed up and started blogging.

Please let MJ or me know if we can help you with any questions you might have about blogging.

Reminder: MJ has created a ‘how to blog’ handbook that is now available on our Horizons website at http://extension.ag.uidaho.edu/horizons/coaches.htm at the very top of the page… Thanks MJ!

Also, for those communities that may be looking for a little more training, please contact MJ at merijoz@uidaho.edu / 208-885-8949 to see how she can help you.

Rules: Post your answers on your blogsite by May 6 by midnight and be entered in the drawing for one of our book titles…
NOTE: Please enter your answers as either a comment to the original question OR as a brand new entry on your blog so that the answers are easy for people to find.

Reflective Questions:

What is something unique about your Horizons community that you’d like to share with the rest of the world? What makes your community different from the one right down the road? Is it a strength your community can capitalize on or a burden you have to bear? Or both? For example, Sun Valley has the beautiful landscape, ski resorts, etc. but the tourism industry has also left behind many local people who are now unable to afford to live in the town they work in…

Scavenger Hunt Question: This week the scavenger hunt is a simple assignment. Find an entry on one of the Horizons community blogs (or even your own blog) and leave a comment to the author. It’s fun to give and get feedback about things we’re doing and talking about.

This week’s winner will receive:
The working poor: invisible in America by David K. Shipler
And
Building Communities From the Inside Out: A Path Toward Finding and Mobilizing a Community’s Assets by John P. Kretzmann and John L. McKnight.
