Exploring Careers

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Two hundred students participated in a Career Fair at Lakeside for Middle School and High School students on May 24th sponsored by the GEAR UP Program and the Coeur d’Alene Tribal NACTEP.

Students had the opportunity to talk to local people about their careers, sharpen thier communication skills, and create networking opportunities. A wide variety of choices with many career paths were available to explore. According to Stefani Hoffman, Lakeside GEAR UP Site Coordinator, “the day was a great success. The students had a good time learning valuable information and our community support was amazing and very much appreciated.”

I was there for the City to represent Business and Administration. I had the chance to give others a peek into the life of municipal work. The student’s thought provoking questions gave me pause a few times as I struggled with the answers. “Why did I choose my career?” was the toughest. Truth be told, I needed a job and a pay check. At least in the beginning. I still need paid, but I choose to stay with my profession because I love what I do. I find fulfillment and purpose in being a public servant. I appreciate the students who reminded me of this. I also appreciate Stefani Hoffman and Diana Lowley for the chance to be a part of the career fair. Getting the community involved is commendable.
