Lakeside Kudos

March 20th, 2009 by laura

Lakeside Middle School Native American Art and Culture class is currently working on the development of a mural for placement on an interior wall in the Plummer Post office. All the work and talent going in to the mural will be provided by students from the middle school. The children, under the leadership of Barb Agte have designated a theme of “Cultures of the Area”, and are busy making the mural a reality. We look forward to the unveiling.

Lakeside Middle School has also received recognition from the State Department of Education in the form of selection as a “Showcase School”.
Improved scores on state standardized tests put LMS into achieving Adequate Yearly Progress, and will be honored in April by the Governor.

The Board of Trustees authorized an updated Facilities Assessment to be conducted by ALSC Architects. ALSC worked closely with structural, electrical, mechanical, and environmental engineers and specialists to prepare a thorough and detailed assessment of the district’s student occupied buildings. The assessment includes recommended improvements, the cost range of these improvements, and a comparison of costs to repair or renovate vs the cost of replacement of the each building. While this report is still in draft form, it can be reviewed by any patron at any time. The Coeur d’Alene Reservation Horizons group (now One Sky North Idaho) will be hosting their quarterly community breakfast on December 18th, 7-9 am at the Plummer Community Center

Everyone is welcome to attend to share a meal and good company with others in our community. The primary goal of the breakfast is to get people together to build relationships.

The secondary goal of the breakfast is to share information. The topic this month is the “State of the Community.” Everyone hears about the affects of our economy around the nation, but we want to focus on how it is affecting our community.

The breakfast is free. Those who feel moved to share are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, paper products, or other items that can be distributed to those less fortunate during the holiday season.

Although an RSVP is not required, it is helpful to make sure we have enough food. Please call 686-1716 with your headcount for the breakfast.

A Season for Giving

November 18th, 2008 by Donna Spier

A Community Gifting Event for Our Children
Saturday, December 6, 2008
10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Lakeside High School Gym
Plummer, ID

Why? Because the people of St. Maries, Plummer, Worley, Tensed and DeSmet come together to provide our children who are faced with struggles and challenges with the ability to “purchase” gifts for their friends and family for Christmas. The children do their chores and homework to earn “Christmas dollars” from their families. They spend these “dollars” at an exclusive shopping extravaganza set up just for them.

How? You, our community members donate new and “nearly” new items that a child might like to give to a brother, sister, parent or grandparent. The recipients of these gifts will be small children, school age children, teenagers, and adults, so all kinds of gifts are needed. The children come with their families (foster families, guardians, etc.) on December 6th, choose their gifts, and we gift wrap and tag their gifts before they leave - full of cookies, hot cocoa, and good will!

What? In addition to a wide variety of gifts, we need wrapping paper, tags, tape, and any kind of gift bag! Gift bags are much easier and faster to finish up, and can be reused. CostCo has packages of 20+ gift bags for around $15.00. Help with set up and take down are always welcome. We also provide cookies, candies, cocoa, and coffee for the weary shoppers, so those cooks out there could help us with some cookies or cupcakes on December 6th.

Who? To donate gifts, supplies, food, cash, or your time and effort to the “A Season for Giving” event, call Christine Rhea at 568-1158, Sheri Thaut, 686-1748, or Kathy Kolar at 686-1366

A Message from Good Samaritan Society - Fairfield

November 18th, 2008 by Donna Spier

Many of the Fairfield residents are from our community. Here is a letter from Dave, Boyle, Administrator of the Good Samaritan Society - Fairfield.

“In a few short hours last July, life changed for many of your friends, neighbors and family that call Good Samaritan Society - Fairfield home. Fire swept through our senior care facility, displacing the majority of the residents. We praise God and give thanks that nobody was injured and for Good Samaritan Society - Spokane Valley, which provided temporary accommodations for our displaced loved ones. They lived out the Good Samaritan Society’s mission of sharing God’s love in word and deed by providing shelter to older persons in need!

“Although damaged and needing extensive repairs, Good Samaritan Society - Fairfield is again home to the majority of the residents displaced by the July fire. We need your help to restore our community of care to the home-like setting your friends and neighbors - our residents - deserve.

“Good Samaritan Society - Fairfield is a not-for-profit long-term healthcare community that relies on support from generous donors like you who believe in our mission. These donations help provide the ‘extras’ our residents deserve but our budget simply can’t provide. Now, more than ever, we need your help to rebuild their home.

“Please join in our mission of caring by sharing. Your gift of $1,000. $500, $100, $50 or any amount will truly impact the lives of those we serve and help sustain a vital part of our community. Gifts are tax-deductible within IRS guidelines.

“Thank you for answering the call and sharing your treasures with a gift to our rebuilding campaign. My door is always open to discuss residents’ need and to share a cup of coffee with you. Call me anytime at (509) 283-2118.”
